The school year is almost over, and kids are excited to enjoy their first summer with minimal restrictions for a few years, while parents may be worried about how to keep their kids safe, happy, busy, and let’s admit, distracted.
Whether you’re going away this summer or staying home, here are our best summer activity ideas for kids!
You can let your kids socialize at local playgrounds while you can socialize with other parents and your friends. Socializing is extremely important for children’s emotional and psychological development, and it is something that they have been mostly deprived of for the last two summers. Of course, make sure to follow your local authorities’ guidelines while socializing.
Exercise, getting to know the neighborhood, and enjoying the great outdoors as a family! Need we say more?
This is a great way of teaching them life skills while having a fun family time. You can bake, cook, decorate cakes and cookies, or make things from scratch like lemonade or ice cream.
If you have a backyard, make sure to use it during summer for stargazing, camping, bonfires, water fights, or any other outdoor activity. Getting out of the house, even only a few meters, will keep them entertained for a long time.
You can schedule theme picnics for each week with themed food like unicorn cakes, tea in fancy cups for royal tea, pizzas for Italian day, or dinosaur shaped cookies! Let your kids get involved in each step: choosing the theme and preparing the treats!
Check the municipalities, schools, or other institutions near you for summer camps for kids. In most places, you can find camps for swimming, tennis, football, dance, and a lot of different activities. Some of these camps are free of charge, while some of them may require a fee. Taking part in different camps or courses throughout the summer will help your kids make new friends, gain new skills, and have fun! Just make sure not to overbook your kids, because summer is their free time and they should enjoy themselves before anything else.
As we know, most kids love building stuff! These “stuff” can be blanket forts, lego castles, tents in the backyard, or sandcastles! These building activities help kids in different ways such as developing their motor and cognitive skills at the same time. Another plus is, they take a long time!
These home projects can be building a family garden, painting doors or walls, rearranging their rooms, or decluttering their clothes or toys! Kids love to have a say in their environment, and you can probably find something they would like to change in your home.
If your kids are going to primary school, you can make this a very fun and also educational activity! These journals don’t have to be diaries about what they have done that day, which can be boring for some children. Instead, you can set aside 15 minutes of family journaling time each day and give a prompt like “What I want from my summer holiday” or “my favorite toys”. For younger kids, you can visualize the journaling prompts and make them draw your prompts like “the perfect day” or, again, “my favorite toys”.
You can invite your kids’ friends for sleepovers or board games, so they are not away from their friends when they are not at the school. While your kids are playing, you can spend time getting to know other parents and have some quality time with other adults.
