Back-To-School Season Is Here! How To Live This Period In The Best Way Possible

September 02, 2022

Summer is coming to an end, which means that the dreaded back-to-school season now begins. After weeks of relaxing and going on vacation, getting back to the school's rhythm can be difficult and, let's be completely honest, a little bit traumatic. This applies to both the little ones, who will have to go back to class to follow their lessons, and to parents, who will have to add their kids' school routines to everything else they already do.

To make this transition as easy and smooth as possible, we want to help you by giving you some tips and tricks. This regard both your kids and you. The little ones will be able to slowly get back to their school routine (or create one if they have never been to school before), and parents can experience and live this time with less stress and more peace of mind. If you can face the back-to-school period and the first few weeks of school with a relaxed mindset, you will be able to better help your kids. Knowing they can count on you for everything they might need during the new school year will make them face the challenges and difficult moments with a better spirit.

So keep reading to discover our back-to-school tips and tricks for parents and kids!

Tip 1. Slowly bring your kid's sleep schedule back to that of school days

Start to slowly bring the time of the alarm clock to what should be the right time to go to sleep and wake up on school days. Start ahead of the beginning of the new school year so that by the time the first day arrives, your kids will already be used to going to sleep and waking up earlier. Avoiding the sudden shock will definitely help your little ones!

Tip 2. Talk with your kids to explain to them what they should expect from the first day of school

This is even more important if your kids have never been to school before, thus having no idea of what will happen and how everything will work. But even if your kids have already been to school and this is not going to be their first year, having this kind of conversion might still help them. Take a moment to explain what they can expect from the first day and what they will do. By already having a general idea, they will live the first day of school more positively and happily, and they will be more excited to go. The unknown can be a bit intimidating sometimes!

Tip 3. Talk with your kids about their feelings

Sit together with your kids and let them talk openly about how they feel about going back to school and starting the new year. Listen to them and let them ask you questions if they have any. If they know that you are there for them and that they can freely talk to you about any doubt or emotion they are feeling, they will be more aware that it is okay for them to come to you if they need something.

Tip 4. Create an after-school schedule

When school hours end, there are still so many other things your kids have to do. They have to study, do their homework, do whatever sport they want, do other activities, play, relax, eat a snack and whatnot. Managing everything and finding time for all these things can be very difficult and, eventually, quite stressful. Creating an after-school schedule will make it easier for you to track everything and help your kids manage their time. This will also make it possible for you to leave some space for your kids to relax and have some leisure time for themselves. Studying and being active is essential, but it is still necessary for your kids to have some moments where they can simply enjoy their own time.

Tip 5. Buy in advance school supplies

Buying in advance whatever school supplies your kids might need will make you avoid the last-minute rush, which is never good. Before buying products and accessories, look at what is left from the previous years, as you might already have some of the stuff you wanted to buy which is still usable. You will save money and time and won't waste school supplies you can still use. It might be better if you also write down everything you will have to buy and how much of each piece you will need so that you won't miss anything. To get your kids more excited about going back to school, involve them in the process of school shopping by letting them pick the supplies they want and like best.

Tip 6. Make space in your house

After buying the new school supplies, it's time to organise them in your house. Collect all the school supplies you have, both the new and old ones, and put everything in one place. This will make it easier to find them, and it will help your kids since they will already know where their school stuff is stored, making it easier for them to take what they need.

Tip 7. Family time is still important

As the school year begins and all the usual activities start again, having some moments where the whole family gather gets more difficult. Even if complicated, it's still important for you to have some dedicated moments where it's just you and the rest of the family. These moments could be dinner time or bedtime, or after dinner. No phones, no TV and no distractions. Do fun activities, tell each other how your day went and what you did, and spend quality time together. You will find yourselves looking forward to these moments!

Tip 8. Everything you can, do it the night before

It doesn't really matter if it is the night before the first day of school or just any other night before a normal school day. If you can prepare, organise or do something the night before, just do it! Try as much as possible to avoid the last minutes rushes before going to school, the chances of forgetting something drastically increase. Prepare ahead your kids' clothes for the next day to avoid those tragic scenarios for choosing what to wear in the morning. Make sure your kids have already prepared their backpacks the night before with what they will need during the next day. The only things your kids should do in the morning are wake up, eat their breakfast and get ready to go to school.

Tip 9. Take a moment for yourself

Yes, you are your kids' guide. Yes, you need to check that everything is ready and organised for your kids' back-to-school and for every other usual day. But remember, you also need to take some "you" moments and relax. Even if it's just for 10 minutes, do it. You got this!
