Florence with Kids: Family Friendly City Guide

August 18, 2022

City cradle of the Italian language and the Renaissance, Florence is one of the most beautiful and important art cities in the world. Strolling through its streets is like walking into an open-air museum, and this is why you shouldn't be surprised if you will end up spending more time looking around you than where you are actually walking. Here you can admire churches and sumptuous palaces built upon request by the enlightened princes of the time. In the city's shops, several works of art were created, the majority of which you can admire and see today in museums. The capital of Tuscany is thus one of the most visited destinations in the world. And all this takes on an even more special value if you go to Florence with your little ones! They will also appreciate everything this location has to offer as most of the museums and associations of the city organize activities dedicated to young kids.

Since walking around Florence is one of the best ways to discover and admire it, we recommend you take advantage of a stroller so that your kids won't get too tired. And since we at Babonbo don't want to tire you, mum and dad, during your journey to this city, we recommend you rent the equipment your babies will need directly from our providers in the area. Visiting Florence has never been easier! So here is your new baby-friendly city guide for your next trip with babies on board to Florence! (Small spoiler: most likely, a single trip to this city will not be enough to discover it all!)

Where to visit in Florence?

Santa Maria del Fiore
Completed in the fifteenth century, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore was, at the time, the largest church in the world. Today, its dimensions make this building, that is one of the symbols of the city of Florence, the third-largest church in all of Europe. The cathedral is the result of the collective work of several artists (among the most known are Giotto and Brunelleschi) who contributed to its construction. Characteristic is the variety of colors you can see on the building's walls resulting from the different types of materials that were used. Of course, not only the exterior of the cathedral is worth admiring, but the interior will also take your breath away! A little advice we give you is to buy the tickets online to avoid long queues when entering.

Palazzo Vecchio
The beating heart of Florence, Palazzo Vecchio, is now the town hall and museum, but, in the past, it was the symbol of the political power of the city. By visiting this palace, you will have the chance to admire its beautiful halls, corridors, and gorgeous decorations. In addition, you can take advantage of the educational activities that the museum organizes, which are also designed by keeping parents and their little ones in mind. The advantage of these alternative tours is that they will make it possible for you to visit areas of the building that are not usually part of the "classic" itinerary. It will be a real adventure to discover the secrets of Palazzo Vecchio that your kids will also enjoy.

Museo di Galileo
The Galileo Museum is one of the most famous science history museums in the world. Here are preserved and exhibited all kinds of scientific instruments used and built up to the XX century. Here you will have the opportunity to see astrolabes, compasses, armillary spheres, and much more. The small collection of pocket watches is also very nice. An absolute must-see is Galileo's telescope, with which he discovered the lunar mountains and the satellites of Jupiter. To make this museum even more interesting are several interactive and educational activities organized for kids of all ages. Your little ones will have a lot of fun!

Where to eat in Florence?

Lungarno 23
One of the first places we recommend you stop to eat is Lungarno 23, where you can eat many specialties at any time of the day. All the dishes you can eat here are prepared with the best fresh, seasonal ingredients. You can choose between appetizers, desserts, unique and classic recipes, vegetable dishes, and more. You can also decide, mainly based on the period of the year in which you will go to Florence, whether to eat outdoors (with a beautiful view of the center of the city) or indoors. This restaurant also pays special attention to the little ones, as there is a changing table for babies and books to keep the kids entertained.

Ai Banchi del Mercato Centrale
One of the main problems, when you want to eat out with your kids, is that they very often want to eat one thing while, on the other hand, you want something completely different. To solve this problem, we advise you to stop at the Central Market, where you can find several stalls, each of which prepares different dishes so that each member of the family can choose whatever they want. It is a very simple but super good and tasty place! After ordering from the selected stalls, you can enjoy your food at one of the tables present there.

Fattoria di Maiano
Last but not least, we suggest the Fattoria di Maiano, where you can enjoy different Tuscan specialties, all while appreciating a splendid view over the Tuscan hills. Here, too, you can choose between indoor or outdoor seating. After eating, you can also visit the animal farm so that your little ones can discover its behind-the-scenes. You can thus take guided tours among the olive trees, see ducks, geese, donkeys, goats, horses, and cows, and discover the secrets of oil preparation.

Where to stay in Florence?

If, on the one hand, getting around Florence on foot is one of the best ways to visit the city, on the other this implies that at the end of the day, you will all be very tired, especially the little ones. For this reason, it is essential to find the most appropriate accommodation for your needs. Here are some that might be suitable for you. If you find yourself in need of additional baby equipment for your kids, remember that you can always rent it from our Babonbo providers in the area!

Hotel Savoy
This hotel has family rooms and suites where you and the rest of your family can stay comfortably. In addition, bottle warmers, baby bathtubs, and free baby food are available. In general, the hotel can be defined as baby-friendly as there are numerous other services for kids. It is located in the heart of Florence, near the Duomo and the Uffizi Gallery.

Hotel Santa Maria Novella
Also, in this hotel, you can find family rooms. It is a perfect starting point to discover and visit the city as it is very close to the major points of interest. Among these are the Uffizi, the Piazza della Signoria, the Cathedral, and the Campanile, all reachable within a few minutes walk.

Agriturismo Montalbino
Here you can find apartments for the whole family for when you want to be more independent, but also more classic rooms. If you need, you can have on request baby cots and high chairs. The Agriturismo is a charming village in the Chianti area, among the Tuscan hills. It is a bit outside of Florence but still perfect if you are looking to stay in touch with nature while being near the city.
